Halifax Harbor
This is what we did on Aug 1st...
This morning we had an innovative breakfast hosted by our caravan staff. They made us "breakfast in a bag", which is omelet materials (of our choosing) placed into a ziplock bag and boiled in water till done. It was unique and delicious!
After breakfast, we went to Clearwater Seafoods to purchase lobsta' (New England pronunciation!) for tonight's dinner. They had cooked hardshell 1.5# lobstas' for pretty reasonable prices(well, reasonable for lobsta'!!).
Next, we went to the harbor boardwalk to see the sights. The replica ship of the Amistad(used in the movie of the same name) is docked in Halifax Harbor for the next 6 days. Today is Freedom Day in Canada, which is the celebration of the day slavery was banned in 1833. They were giving public tours of the ship but the lines were too long so we didn't actually go aboard. It sure looked like a small ship to sail all the way across the Atlantic-what torture for those people!
The Maritime Museum has several ships and numerous artifacts on display. It has artifacts from the Titanic that were recovered while body recovery efforts were underway. Body recovery continued from April until June. It was an enormous effort.
After lunching in a pub next to the harbor, we watched crystal artists working for Nova Scotia Crystal cut and shape various glassware pieces. We were too late to watch them do any firing, but the glassware and artistry is exquisite!! And pricey!
The day was so much cooler than the last few days, we stayed at the harbor all day just relaxing. Halifax Harbor is suprisingly busy. We saw a large cruise ship docked, several container ships moving in and out of the harbor as well as sailing and private ships of varying sizes. One yacht docked there is 150 feet in length with a crew of 15--what a life!
Oh, Yes the lobsta' were great!!
