Anniversary in Old Mesilla

We found ourselves in Las Cruces, New Mexico on our 32nd wedding anniversary. Where to celebrate? Our campground host told us the best place in town was the Double Eagle Restaurant in the the Old Mesilla section of Los Cruces.
The Old Mesilla plaza was the area originally settled by the Mexcian government in 1848. The building that houses the Double Eagke Restaurant is over 150 years old and was once the Governer's mansion. We spent an interesting afternoon exploring all the old buidings around the plaza. The old courthouse where Billy the Kid was originally convicted and sentenced to hang is on on corner of the plaza. It's quite an interesting place.
That evening we treated ourselves to the Double Eagle Restaurant.

It's elegant dining room houses beautiful French baccarat chandeliers measuring seven feet by three feet, each containing more than 1000 hand-cut glass crystals. The solid gold ceiling was hand-gilded with 18- and 24-karat gold leaf. The 20 gold leafed French mirrors are ornately carved in Greek Revival style. The many paintings, several of which have their equal only in the finest museums, express the charm and ambiance of a bygone era.
We really enjoyed being in such a lovely place. We had a fabulous dinner. Our steaks were prepared at our table with lots of yummy garlic butter!! The restaurant provided us with free dessert for our celebration and we had flambe'd Bananas Foster , also prepared at our table! What a decadent treat ! It was a wonderful evening and definately a place we would recommend to anyone looking for a special place in Las Cruces New Mexico.
